Equipment

  • 1 large pot
  • Colander or strainer
  • Masher or potato ricer
  • Bowl
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Whisk or spoon

Ingredients

  • 3-4 large potatoes peeled and chopped into 1-inch cubes (450g)
  • 1/4 cup milk or half-and-half 60ml
  • 2 tablespoons butter 30g
  • Salt and pepper to taste (2g)

Optional:

  • Garlic powder or minced garlic 1g
  • Grated cheddar cheese 30g
  • Chopped fresh herbs such as chives or parsley (10g)

Instructions

  • Place the chopped potatoes in the large pot and add enough cold water to cover them. Bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce the heat to medium-low and simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender when pierced with a fork.
  • Drain the potatoes in the colander or strainer and return them to the pot. Add the milk, butter, salt, and pepper, and mash the potatoes with a masher or potato ricer until they're smooth and creamy.
  • Taste and adjust the seasoning as needed. If the potatoes are too thick, add a little more milk. If they're too thin, add a little more butter or mash them for a few more minutes.
  • Serve the mashed potatoes hot, garnished with chopped fresh herbs or grated cheddar cheese if desired.
