Cranberry sauce is a vibrant condiment, that is made from fresh cranberries, sugar, and a hint of liquid, usually water or orange juice. It is very simple to prepare yet itadds a burst of color and flavor to any table.

The beauty of cranberry sauce lies in its versatility both in preparation and in use. Add a splash of orange zest for a citrusy twist, a pinch of cinnamon for warmth, or even a dash of maple syrup for extra depth. Some prefer a chunky texture, while others opt for a smooth, jelly-like consistency.

Equipment

  • medium saucepan
  • Wooden spoon or spatula
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Zester or microplane (if using orange zest)
  • Serving bowl

Ingredients
  

  • 12 oz fresh or frozen cranberries (one bag)
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup water or orange juice for added flavor
  • 1 teaspoon orange zest this is optional
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon this is optional
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions
 

Prepare the Cranberries

  • Rinse the cranberries under cold water and pick out any soft or damaged ones.

Cook the Cranberry Sauce

  • In a medium saucepan, combine the water (or orange juice) and sugar. Stir over medium heat until the sugar dissolves, forming a simple syrup.

Add the Cranberries

  • Stir in the cranberries and bring the mixture to a gentle boil.

Simmer

  • Reduce the heat to a simmer. Cook for 10-12 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the cranberries burst and the sauce thickens.

Enhance the Flavor

  • If desired, stir in orange zest, cinnamon, and a pinch of salt during the last few minutes of cooking.

Cool the Sauce

  • Remove the saucepan from heat and let the cranberry sauce cool to room temperature. The sauce will continue to thicken as it cools.

Serve and Enjoy

  • Transfer the sauce to a serving bowl and refrigerate until ready to serve.
