The Best Wassail Recipe

December 12, 2024 by Oge

The Best Wassail Recipe

Wassail is your favorite spicy drink that feels like a warm hug on a chilly day. This very populaar and traditional spiced beverage is a mix of apple cider, orange juice, and pineapple juice, gently simmered with brown sugar, cinnamon, cloves, and allspice. This process produces a fragrant, slightly tangy, and sweet drink that fills your home with the irresistible scent of the holidays.

What makes wassail special is its versatility. It’s the perfect beverage for a family gathering or holiday party at home.

The orange and apple slices not only add to the flavor but make this drink as pretty as it is delicious. Ladle it into mugs, maybe garnish with a cinnamon stick, and watch your guests light up with that first sip.

Whether you’re toasting to good health or simply enjoying the moment, wassail is a drink with history and heart, meant to bring people together. Plus, it’s super easy to make that is what I want to show you with this simple-to-follow wassail recipe.

Equipment

  • Large pot or slow cooker
  • Ladle
  • Strainer (optional, for spices)
  • Serving mugs or cups

Ingredients

  • 8 cups apple cider
  • 2 cups orange juice
  • 1 cup pineapple juice
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • 3 cinnamon sticks
  • 1 teaspoon whole cloves
  • 1 teaspoon allspice berries
  • 1 orange sliced into rounds
  • 1 apple sliced into rounds
  • ½ cup brandy or rum (Optional) for an adult version

Instructions

  • Combine Liquids: In a large pot or slow cooker, pour the apple cider, orange juice, and pineapple juice. Stir to mix.
  • Add Sweetener: Stir in the brown sugar until dissolved.
  • Infuse Spices: Add the cinnamon sticks, whole cloves, allspice berries, and orange slices. If you prefer easy removal of the spices later, tie them in a piece of cheesecloth or a tea infuser.
  • Simmer: Heat the mixture over low heat for about 2 hours. Do not let it boil; gentle heat allows the spices to infuse properly. If using a slow cooker, set it on low.
  • Add Apples: During the last 30 minutes, add the apple slices for extra flavor and visual appeal.
  • Optional Alcohol: If making an adult version, stir in the brandy or rum just before serving.
  • Serve: Strain the wassail into mugs, leaving behind the spices and fruit slices. Garnish with an additional cinnamon stick or orange slice if desired.
